Loose Botanical Sketching - An easy way to begin

Sometimes we long for something that gently brings us back to ourselves. Something that isn’t demanding, isn’t overwhelming, and carries no expectations. Something that grounds us - and at the same time lights a small spark within.

That something can be a very small, almost unnoticeable moment: a pencil, a sheet of paper, and a simple botanical subject.

That’s where Loose Botanical Sketching begins.

Drawing in a “loose” way - relaxed and free - is a playful approach. Perfect for those moments when you feel like being creative, without chasing a big goal or result.

What Loose Botanical Sketching really is

Loose Botanical Sketching isn’t a specific style of botanical art. It’s a calm, open way of engaging creatively with plants.

It’s not as precise as classical botanical illustration, and not as narrative or scene-based as urban sketching. Instead, it creates its own space - for anyone who finds joy in plants and wants to express that connection in a new way.

Here, you’re invited to experiment.

Let lines wander, place colors intuitively, leave out details, and focus on what you see and feel - not on what would be considered “correct.”

It’s not about recreating a plant perfectly. It’s about making your perception visible.

This way of drawing feels light. Accessible. Forgiving. And it’s a beautiful starting point if you’d like to gently awaken your creative side again.

It’s also a wonderful way to engage more deeply with individual plants - whether you’re consciously aware of it or not doesn’t really matter.

Why many get stuck here - and why you don’t have to

Before people even begin drawing, I often hear the same phrases: “I can’t draw.”

But drawing has very little to do with talent. It’s about observation, repetition, and the willingness to start - and that’s exactly where loose sketching comes in.

Or: “I don’t have time.”

For a small subject, you only need a few minutes. It’s not about creating a masterpiece. It’s about giving yourself a moment. Describing what you see - freely and creatively.

Another classic: “I don’t know where to start.”

That’s exactly why my Botanical SketchVibes series exists - my personal take on Loose Botanical Sketching.

It works because you need very little material, you can start right away, and you’re guided step by step toward your first small successes.

What you learn through Loose Botanical Sketching

Even though this approach feels relaxed, something meaningful happens inside.

You begin to look more consciously. You simplify shapes instead of getting lost in them. You find a rhythm that suits you - and slowly feel a creative routine emerge that feels light and nourishing.

Over time, trust in your own abilities grows.

Loose Botanical Sketching doesn’t ask for perfection, it offers presence.

And presence has become a rare gift in our fast-paced world, where our thoughts are constantly pulled elsewhere.

With just a few small exercises, you can gently arrive back in the here and now.

Mini exercise for today: 3 minutes + 1 sheet of paper + 1 subject

Take a piece of paper, a pencil, and a small botanical object - a leaf, a sprig of herbs, a radish, whatever you like or have nearby. Set a timer for three minutes.

Spend the first 30 seconds simply observing your subject.

What do you notice? Which shapes or characteristics catch your eye first?

Then, during the remaining 2½ minutes, draw what you saw. Don’t correct yourself. Don’t worry about whether it’s “right.”

It doesn’t matter if your line is wobbly or if you build your drawing with lots of small strokes. See what you can capture in this short amount of time.

This mini exercise gives you a first, small sense of success - not in the sense of “This looks exactly how I wanted it to,” but rather: “I started. It was fun. And I’m proud that I dared.”

If you feel like going further…

In Botanical SketchVibes, you’ll find many small tutorials that guide you step by step as you fill your sketchbook:

    • an avocado for a creative pause

    • a papaya with beautiful textures

    • a mushroom, if you’d like to begin with more muted colors

You can try them individually whenever you need a little timeout from everyday life, or see them as preparation for what’s coming next.

    Your next step

Loose Botanical Sketching is just the beginning.

You might be surprised by how much joy something so simple can bring. How strengthening it feels. How close it brings you to nature.

And maybe, just like I did back then, you’ll sense that something is beginning to grow here.

Something bigger than a single sketch.
